Martial Arts / Self-Defense Training

 

100% of the profits from our martial arts / self-defense programs are used to support our mental health programs to help keep our counseling services affordable and accessible to everyone regardless of their financial situation.

Benjamin Franklin is credited with coining the axiom, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." While he was referring to fire safety, the axiom has since held true in healthcare as well.

In our efforts to help people improve their physical and mental fitness to build resiliency against future mental and physical health disturbances, Sapphire Valley Wellness Center, LLC offers martial arts-based self-defense training to the people in our local community. All of our self-defense programs are designed to improve cardiovascular fitness, core body strength, self-confidence, self-esteem, and stress management. The training programs are developed by our certified MMA conditioning specialist and led by instructors with years of experience in the programs we offer. 

Sparring is an important part of developing self-defense skills and being able to apply them in real-world situations. All of our programs involve sparring as part of the training. Safety is important to us and mental and physical maturity are important safety considerations when using sparring during training. Due to the nature of the techniques we will be training, we have set an age limit for the programs we currently offer. 

 

The programs we offer include:

 

Kickboxing 

Kickboxing training teaches self-defense using upper and lower body striking and protection skills primarily from a standing position. Our kickboxing program is primarily based on Muay Thai Kickboxing with techniques from various other styles mixed in. This is not a "cardio kickboxing" program, this a full kickboxing training program taught within the competition rules for the sport for the purpose of developing self-defense skills. 

 

Kids Kickboxing

Our kids kickboxing program is divided into 2 groups, ages 5-9 and ages 10-13, as an attempt to keep the students grouped with similar physical size and cognitive development. Our kids kickboxing training focuses on developing basic defense skills, motor skills, and fitness as well as respect, confidence, perseverance, and self-esteem. 

 

Jiu-Jitsu

Jiu-Jitsu training teaches self-defense using groundwork and submission skills to protect against and neutralize the physical threat. While other techniques and styles will be mixed in, our program is primarily Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. While our Jiu-Jitsu program is designed to develop self-defense skills, it will be taught using the competition rules for the sport. 

 

Mixed Martial Arts

Our MMA Practical Self-Defense program is a unique program developed by Sapphire Valley Wellness Center, LLC. The program teaches Israeli martial arts techniques in addition our kickboxing and Jiu-Jitsu techniques. This program is focused on training techniques that are for practical use in real-world situations for survival regardless of any sports competition rules. The participant will develop the skills using realistic scenarios in the class environment so that they become purposeful and instinctual skills if they are ever needed for use in a real-life situation. 

Important Notice Regarding Temporary Changes For Self-Defense Training During the COVID-19 Pandemic

 

  • As we begin making changes to prepare for re-opening the gym, the live video sessions are no longer being offered effective June 1, 2020.

 

  • We will begin offering conditioning programs indoors starting June 22, 2020 for all programs. Condition programs are non-contact programs so as to meet the distance requirements being enforced by Governor Northam. 

 

  • The conditioning programs will be held during the class times as listed on the training schedule. If no one has yet registered for the program, the class will not be held and we may not be present at the gym. 

 

  • Anyone who is interested in a program and would like to try it for free must make an appointment prior to particpiating. This is how we can ensure we are meeting the perosn limit required in the orders being enforced by Governor Northam. 

 

  • The training schedule has changed significantly from before the COVID-19 pandemic started. These changes were necessary to continue to be able to offer these programs as a result of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
